tables of the met gala

One of the biggest red carpet events of the year – the Met Gala – also happens to be on one of the biggest event design inspirations of the year for me. The Met Gala, also known as the Museum’s Costume Institute Benefit, is a fundraiser that generates the Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

The design of these galas, which I’ve talked about before is impeccable.  Every little detail down to the design of the petit fours served is theme appropriate and elegant.  I came across previous years’ images via Vogue.com and was drawn to how the photography illustrated the importance of a stunning table scape even for a large scale event.  You can see how the every detail down to the glass color impacts the overall space design.

Chanel 2005 I love the elegance of the white, green color store and botanicals throughout the space.  The table settings are stunning but also artfully designed greens & boxwood brought in added just enough impact and texture.

Anglomania 2006 – Tradition and Transgression in British fashion – a perfect example of how different lighting, florals and color schemes can create a totally different mood in a space.

Superheros 2008 – Fashion and Fantasy.  The food even incorporates the theme, I love this shot of small bites designed with a Superhero theme supported a bolder modern charger {fit for a superhero}.   The overall space mood is significantly more modern with only straight lines for tables, impactful lighting and superhero sculptures.

Alexander McQueen | Savage Beauty 2011.  This exhibit was both moving and disturbing.  If you had the opportunity to attend I am sure you can relate.  The Gala design was romantic and full of beautiful florals all the way down to the tables, the florals were the hero of this event design.

Schapiarelli & Prada | Impossible conversations 2012 – incorporating Elsa Scharpiarelli’s signature color shocking pink along with bold patterns and designs prevalent in their collections. The custom chairs are fabulous and were masterfully designed.

Punk | Chaos to Couture 2013. The impact of the color on these tables & lighting canopy in the overall space is breathtaking.  I also love the spray painted menus and custom spray painted napkins.

The next Met Gala will be held on May 4th, and Vogue has announced that it will celebrate Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion.  You can read more about it here.

I am curious though, out of the past Met Gala designs which is your favorite?
