If you can dream it…

…You can do it!  This is one of my favorite quotes ever and it is by Walt Disney.  It’s true!  I was all set to share a cocktail recipe with you today and then I learned of the news regarding Tory Burch’s latest milestone that I thought was very much worth blogging about instead. Forbes Magazine announced earlier this month that she has grown her business and brand to a point where she is officially a billionaire.  And while it’s not necessarily about the money, it’s about the idea that she took her business from her kitchen to an empire within 9 years.

To me this story is timely, as I have spoken with a few friends this week who have recently become discouraged with their careers {which I hate to see} and this story of a strong vision combined with perseverance towards a goal is exactly the type inspiration we could all use as we each strive to be the best we can be and achieve our goals & dreams, even when there are bumps along the way {there will always be bumps}.  Having recently started a business myself with some big goals, I too can appreciate this.  I think Estee Lauder said it best in a quote I recently came across:

Did you know that Tory Burch started her business out of her kitchen in 2004? According to Forbes Magazine, she will join their list with other fabulous ladies {who are also self made billionaires} including Oprah Winfrey and Meg Whitman {she’s in good company}.  Tory is a former fashion PR professional {encouraging!!} and is now the second youngest self-made female billionaire in America {Spanx inventor Sara Blakely is the youngest}.

Tory really made her mark in 2006 when she launched her iconic flat that we all know which she named after her mother “Reva” and in 2010, Oprah named them one of her “favorite things”.  In the PR world we always say, anything that makes it on Oprah’s list, turns into gold;  did they ever!!

Regardless of her incredible talent, this was not a smooth road for her.  Like anything in life, you have to stay the course and work towards your vision, regardless of the roadblocks that come your way and the people who tell you it can’t be done.  Tory was faced with adversity from a divorce and financial battle with her ex-husband, along with him launching a brand to compete against hers, followed by a lawsuit against her and her board of directors {you can see the full story here}.  I am so glad she overcame this for herself and her brand, aren’t you?

So don’t give up your dreams, we all have our challenges but once we persevere through them, there is absolutely no reason why we can’t each be as successful as Tory Burch has been; it wasn’t easy for her either.  Congratulations to her and her team and thank you for being an inspiration to so many of us!!  I will definitely smile each time I walk by her recently opened store {which is beautifully done by the way} in Boston’s Copley Center and be reminded that “if you can dream it, you can do it”.

I came across these images featured on Vogue.com of her and her sons at her Southampton home.  They are a true representation of her bohemian preppy style and I thought you’d enjoy this glimpse into her life.

What a lovely setting for a fabulous al fresco dinner party – I love the glasses!!

I also perused her website to learn more about her, and came across this business advice from Tory herself:

WHEN STARTING A COMPANY YOU MUST…
Have a unique idea, absolute focus and the tenacity to follow through.

THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE I’VE RECEIVED IS…
Always be transparent and straightforward.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE…
The importance of being an information gatherer and doing thorough research.

I LOVE WHAT I DO BECAUSE…
It’s the perfect balance of being creative and entrepreneurial.

NEVER BE AFRAID OF…
Change. It’s usually hard but often is essential.

MY GREATEST TALENT IS…
Recognizing talent in others and building a fantastic team.

MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS…
Balancing work and family.

I OVERCOME THAT CHALLENGE BY…
Prioritizing. My boys and stepdaughters come first and everything falls into place after that.

I HOPE TO ONE DAY…
Build the Tory Burch Foundation into a global organization {an organization she founded that supports the economic empowerment of women and families}.

So with that, I wish you a great day, full of inspiration and reminders that YOU too can absolutely make your dreams a reality.
