Grapefruit Crush

With another snowfall in Boston and many lovely soups and warm meals behind me, I’ve started craving the refreshing flavor of citrus in my drinks and cuisine as of late.  There is something about the taste of citrus in a dish that makes it feel light, cleansing and incredibly healthy. Not to mention the beauty of the vibrant pink and yellow hues that make up this amazing fruit are a very welcome sight to see during this not so vibrant time of year in New England.

I’ve recently come across some really interesting grapefruit recipes which I’ve now added to my “recipes to try” list and pintrest boards,  and have also been learning through a book I am reading {Eating for Beauty by David Wolfe}, that grapefruit is pretty fabulous for the following reasons:

  • It contains an anti-inflammatory and skin-cleansing enzyme called bromelain {which has been said to help cut cellulite}
  • Grapefruit is also the mildest citrus fruit in acid content yet retains the same strong antiseptic properties found in all citrus fruits
  • They are also mild in sugar making them gentle on the pancreas & blood sugar levels.

Grapefruit also has a place at weddings, showers and entertaining in general, both in terms of it’s bright, yet elegant color, and it’s light flavor that serves as a palette cleanser and/or blends nicely with an array of dishes.  Below is a beautiful wedding inspiration board  by Vermont Vows Wedding Magazine.

So in the spirit of my latest {grapefruit} crush, I thought I would share a few recipes;  both for you to enjoy at home as well as some that would work beautifully for your next party or event…

Grapefruit Carrot & Ginger Juice {a great way to start the day}

  • 2 chopped grapefruits (peel and pith removed}
  • 5 chopped carrots
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and chopped

Pass ingredients through juicer and serve immediately. {I’ve been making green juice almost daily since I started juicing but will be introducing this juice into my daily routine as well.}

Grapefruit Olive Oil Cake

Not quite as healthy as a juice but worth the share and healthy for a bread given its ingredients.  I love this for a breakfast with friends, a tea or to bring as a hostess gift.  It incorporates Greek yogurt and olive oil into the mix and I will probably use an almond flour when I make it.

I made this for dinner last night and it was amazing.  I added a bit {1/2 teaspoon} of extra fresh ginger {so good to do during the flu season to help with your immune system}.  The flavors were bold and it was very clean tasting with the citrus and ginger yet balanced by the velvety flavor of avocado.  I think I need to make it again today!!

I also came across these beautiful grapefruit jello shots via Weddings by Lilly, that would make a nice addition to any grapefruit themed dessert table, as a passed {cocktail} hors d’oeuvre, or simply to serve as an after dinner palette cleanser. These are made with grapefruit soda, limeade, and tequila. Garnished with a slice of fresh grapefruit, they give a whole new meaning to jello shots as they are beautiful & might I add sophisticated!!

And last but certainly not least, this dessert featured in the inspiration board above via the amazing cannelle et vanille, I feel the need to spend a moment on…

Grapefruit & pistachio macaroons, filled with grapefruit, campari + white chocolate ganache and served with lemon thyme pots de creme, {click here for recipe}.  I am an absolute sucker for macaroons and can easily make a meal of champagne and macaroons regardless of the day, but this recipe – DIVINE!!  Would be an impressive dessert at a wedding, or formal dinner event.

I hope that you too have developed a grapefruit crush through some of these recipes and images.

Enjoy and have a refreshing day!
